How to reduce stress and improve your singing


Stress, we all have it. In this fast paced busy world it is tough to avoid. Stress can take a toll on your body, your mind and yes even your singing. Tension from stress can creep into you shoulders, neck and jaw. From there that tension can affect your voice. Stress can also manifest in acid reflux disease and other physical problems. So, it is best to find some ways of dealing with it.

Some of us are better at dealing with it than others. There are lots of ways of dealing with stress. Some of the top ways are taking slow deep breaths (ex. inhale for five counts hold for one and exhale for six counts note: be sure to count slowly.) You can take this one step further and meditate for 15-20 minutes a day (or more) This doesn’t have to involve strange sitting positions and chants. Simply sitting quietly in a darkened room and concentrating only on your slow deep breaths is meditation too. If you are like me, sitting still and not thinking is not something you are good at, you can try things like Yoga or Tai Chi. I find Yoga to be very helpful because it works with deep breathing (you should inhale and exhale at specific parts of each movement.) and stretching. There are many yoga videos and classes out there that can help you get started. After you finish a class or video you may even be relaxed enough to spend a few minutes meditating.
